The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were signed in 2015 by UN member states to address various global challenges and inequalities facing the world and to achieve environmental sustainability by 2030.
Universities play a key role in achieving the sustainable development goals through their activities in areas such as research, education, environmental and social responsibility, and human resources development. Therefore, universities’ sustainability efforts have a significant global impact on the well-being of present and future generations. Promoting the research and innovation necessary to achieve the sustainable development goals, and providing education and information to understand and raise awareness of the sustainable development goals are central to universities’ contribution to the process. Furthermore, while fulfilling their environmental and social responsibilities required to achieve the sustainable development goals, universities also organize training and programs to ensure that their students become individuals with a strong sense of responsibility. Training students in sustainability-related specializations and providing a qualified workforce for work in sustainability-related sectors is also an important part of this process.
